William Vanwagenen of The Mormon Worker was kind enough to answer the following questions about his organization and publication.

This is the second of occasional posts looking at various Mormon-related grassroots political organizations. The first one was with MESJ.

1. Why and when was The Mormon Worker formed?
The first issue of the Mormon Worker was published in September 2007. Myself, Cory Bushman, and Tyler Bushman had been kicking around the idea for sometime to start a newspaper about radical politics, from a specifically Mormon perspective. Much of the impetus came from the frustration we felt as the US invaded and occupied Iraq. Though we felt the war was deeply immoral and contrary to many basic teachings of the Gospel, most Latter-day Saints, and especially Mormon politicians, were enthusiastic supporters of the organized murder the US military was undertaking in Iraq.

After returning from doing human rights work in Iraq in early 2007, I got together with Tyler, Cory and Ashley Bledsoe, and we finally got our act together to get the paper going. We felt that many of our fellow Latter-day Saints would change their views on the war if presented with information about the terrible human cost of the war, coupled with reminders from LDS scripture that war is evil, and can only be justified in self-defense, which was clearly not the case in Iraq.

We were also frustrated to see a number of members of the Church go inactive, question their testimonies, etc, because they were opposed to the war, but felt that being Mormon basically demanded they support it, because most Mormons in Utah seemed to do so, and because in church we seem to be constantly reminded that we are to support the actions of our government in all circumstances.

2. What are the priorities of The Mormon Worker?
Broadly speaking, the purpose of the Mormon Worker is to articulate and promote, in the context of modern politics, some of the more radical aspects of Mormon theology, in particular loving our enemies (Sermon on the Mount), renouncing war and proclaiming peace (D&C 98), caring for the poor and needy (King Benjamin), and challenging the crimes and abuses of those holding political power (Abinadi).

In the modern context, we feel these doctrines encourage us to love everyone, including terrorists, oppose the ongoing US war on the Iraqi people, seek an economic system which will provide for everyone, especially the poor, and criticize our political leaders for the crimes they commit, such as ordering the abduction and torture of thousands of our Muslim brothers, as evidenced in Bagram, Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.

Senator Gordon Smith is under fire for apparently comparing polygamy with same-sex marriage.

During a gay rights forum in Washington, D.C., Gordon was asked to reconcile his support of domestic partner benefits for same-sex couples while also supporting a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman. . .

“Part of what I fear, as you start defining marriage — we have a long history of doing that in this country, and my Mormon pioneer ancestors were the victims of that. They were literally driven from the United States in the dead of winter for following their religious beliefs.”

“I don’t want that coming back,” Smith continued. “But there are some on the front pages of your newspapers who are trying to now.”

On Friday, Smith issued a statement reaffirmed [sic] his support of gay rights while clarifying his stand on the definition of marriage. “I have been a strong proponent of gay rights — such as domestic partner benefits, ENDA (anti-discrimination laws) and stronger prosecution of hate crimes,” the senator said, “but I oppose changes in the current definition of marriage.”

On Tuesday Smith apologized for mentioning polygamy in the discussion of gay rights. “If you’d grown up a Mormon, and spent your life trying to get out from the shadow of that legacy — it’s an emotional scar that you carry,” Smith told his home state paper. “I meant no offense by sharing that part of my history.”

I’m not sure what the Senator meant by injecting his “emotional scar” into the discussion. But at the same time I don’t understand why polygamy can’t be mentioned alongside same-sex marriage.

If same-sex marriage should be legal by what standard should polygamy be barred? I’m sure Sen. Smith didn’t mean it like this, but if homosexuality is the civil rights movement of our day, modeled after black civil rights, what’s to stop polygamists from doing the same?

Not sure what he’s responding to, but Mike Huckabee doesn’t want the GOP to demonize Obama. He didn’t have a problem doing it quite literally to Romney and other Mormons.

Why are we gloomier than the economy?

Soft? You betcha. In recession? Quite possibly. And a crisis in the financial markets has rattled nerves for months now. But so far, the economy is holding up better than it did during the last two recessions in 1990 and 2001. Employers haven’t shed as many jobs, the unemployment rate is still relatively low, and gross domestic product has kept rising. Things are nowhere near as bad as they were in the Great Depression, or even during the severe recession of 1982-83. The last time consumers were this miserable, in May 1980, the jobless rate was 7.5 percent and inflation was 14.4 percent. Now those numbers are 5.5 percent and 4.2 percent respectively.

Changes and lay offs coming to the Deseret News. The industry-wide slump in circulation and ad revenue hits the DN. It sounds like an increased online LDS presence (i.e. Mormon Times) is part of their future strategy.

A committee, comprised mostly of editors, will begin immediately looking at where those cuts will be made. The paper has about 200 full-time employees.

At the same time, the newspaper will be restructured in an effort to appeal to local readers as well as a worldwide audience, particularly members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who make up the vast majority of the newspaper’s readership. The LDS Church owns the Deseret News.

Cannon described it as a 24-hour news source via words and multimedia that is “more local, more online, more Mormon.”

Traffic as the Test of Christian Character.” It may sound silly but it’s those small things that can be hardest to conquer.

Driving is a magnificent test of our Christian character. We are generally quite anonymous, we have lots of power, and we are fully goal-directed. If anything will demonstrate our spiritual maturity, I suppose that driving will.

While I still think DC drivers are worse, I agree Utah drivers amaze me. Of course, being from both areas does not speak well of me.

I do not have scientific data to support my observations about state contrasts, I only have our experience. When we lived in Alabama, we were surprised at the way drivers let other cars into lines. They exemplified sharing and taking turns. We experienced the same wonderful phenomenon in many communities of Alabama during the six years we lived there. Yet, every time we returned to Utah, it seemed that a Utahn would rather die in a fiery crash than give way in a line of traffic. The gospel may change hearts—but only until we get behind the wheel of a car. Then we become ruthless Pharisees.

Why I am an anti-intellectual:”

Being anti-intellectual is not the same as being anti-intellect. My beef is with a particular social class — the “intelligentsia” — and not with the practice of using one’s intellect to reflect on experience. In my experience, intellectuals (as a class) are ideologically intolerant, easily offended by ordinary humor, and pretentious in their prejudices, which they disguise as universal truths . . .

Intellectuals spray polysyllables like squid ink, to evade the democratic decencies of conversation.

I love that last line.
