On Faith asks the sticky question of what constitutes a “real” religion as opposed to a cult, especially when considering Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Unlike Article VI Blog, I believe it’s a useful discussion because most posts come to similar conclusions that the word “cult” doesn’t have a very useful meaning and is more of a perjorative to forward an agenda.

Unsurprisingly,  On Faith’s LDS posters, Kathleen Flake and Michael Otterson have both posted.  I think Flake sums up the use of “cult” rather well:

Rather, the word has become a means of asserting separation, even if it doesn’t exist. Cult asserts religious difference in value-laden terms at the expense of one religion and for the benefit of another. Cult is a way of saying you are not like us, the good guys, and don’t you forget it.

And as other posters note, the definition of cult is so amorphous, most if not all religions can be categorized as such (I would also add political ideologies as well).

This an age old question that is unlikely to go away.  But, I hope it’s beneficial to the perception that while Mormons are different and have unique beliefs, so does everyone else.  We may not be “creedal” Christians but we are not so different that using the label of “cult” is unproductive.

But then again, maybe Mormonism is a cult after all.

The Church now has a link to the BYU site for the Encyclopedia of Mormonism but doesn’t endorse it as “official.”  It’s still in PDF format unfortunately.

Mitt takes on the GOP

When Republicans act like Democrats, America loses.”  Mitt Romney’s newest TV spot addresses GOP corruption and loss of principles.  This needs to be addressed directly and hopefully it will be a campaign winner.  The party has much to atone for and to pretend otherwise is just to prolong the disconnect with its base and its traditionally winning message.

Some like it but some see it as GOP bashing.  If the party wants to regain credibility it needs to demonstrate that it can police itself.  Otherwise, the party’s unwillingness will lead to more elections like last year.  And deservedly so.

How popular is your last name? Mine isn’t even in the database of top 55,000 names.  “Smith” is where you’d expect it, but “Jones” is only  #4.  What’s #2 and #3?

Somewhat surprisingly, here in ASA’s home state, a Maryland appellate court overturned a lower court and held that marriage is only between a man and a woman.

Happy Constitution Day

Today is Constitution Day.  Last week they started at BYU the “Year of the Constitution” and will be having future “campus visits of three national dignitaries in October and November, when BYU will host U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and bestselling historian Nathaniel Philbrick.”  BYU NewsNet explains why the Constitution is inspired but not scriptural.

Iron Man Trailer

The Iron Man trailer is awesome.

No he hasn’t hacked your ward’s MLS, but the Romney campaign has “rented” the email list for LDS Living for an upcoming Salt Lake rally.  Although it does some some marketing with Deseret Book, LDS Living is a private company and not officially tied to the Church.  A Des News letter to the editor complained about it this morning.

Elder Eyring attended today’s ceremonies and read an apology on assignment from the First Presidency.

Elder Henry B. Eyring of the Quorum of the Twelve read the church’s statement on assignment from the church’s governing First Presidency during a memorial ceremony at the grave site of some of the massacre victims at Mountain Meadows, about 35 miles northwest of St. George. The statement also places blame for the Sept. 11, 1857, massacre on the local church leaders at the time and church members who followed their orders to murder some 120 unarmed men, women and children.

Elder Eyring specifically expressed regret for the massacre itself and the unfair blame that has fallen on the Paiutes.

We express profound regret for the massacre carried out in this valley 150 years ago today and for the undue and untold suffering experienced by the victims then and by their relatives to the present time.

A separate expression of regret is owed to the Paiute people who have unjustly borne for too long the principal blame for what occurred during the massacre. Although the extent of their involvement is disputed, it is believed they would not have participated without the direction and stimulus provided by local Church leaders and members.

Church Newsroom: “Hundreds Gather to Honor Mountain Meadows Victims“.

Elder Eyring’s complete statement: “150th Anniversary of Mountain Meadows Massacre

This deserves more attention:  “[C]haplains have been quietly carrying out a systematic purge of religious books and materials that were once available to prisoners in chapel libraries.”  The purge is directed by the Bureau of Prisons to avoid recruiting by “militant Islamic and other religious groups” (what other groups?) and eliminate religious materials which could “discriminate, disparage, advocate violence or radicalize.”
