Mitt Romney spoke to the Utah GOP delegation yesterday and said he wasn’t interested in running in 2012 or in even a cabinet spot in a McCain administration.
After his speech, Romney told reporters he planned to continue campaigning for the GOP even after November. But he said “no thanks” to another run for the White House, even though he said his own campaign was a good experience despite some mistakes — which he declined to elaborate.
“I do not anticipate doing it again. It’s hard to imagine something like that,” Romney said.
The same goes for a spot in a McCain Cabinet, he said, because of what he saw when his father, the late George Romney, served as President Nixon’s secretary of housing and urban development.
“I really would not enjoy being in the Cabinet,” Romney said.
We’ll see, but I’m surprised to hear him so down on both prospects. And if so, why the heck is still subjecting himself to this:
Poltics is truly the most christian of professions. After being defeated in the primaries by a guy who hates you, strung along as his loyal surrogate to not be picked as VP, keep stumping for the guy but then, to make nice with Mike Huckabee?!
To quote Homer Simpson, “This man has turned every cheek on his body.”

Pretty premature statement, I think. I really hope he changes his mind; he’s got a great shot. I hadn’t heard this yet, so thanks for putting it out there.

From what I have read, it sounds like he is not wanting a cabinet seat to preserve his 2012 or 2016 chance. He does not want to become a stooge of the White House be being a cabinet member. While this sounds good, he will also run the risk of being forgotten over the next 4-8 years.
I think that he is denying future White House ambitions because he is not wanting to distract from the current election. As a good team player, he is focused on getting the current party candidate elected. Makes sense.
David, can you really support a man who has hugged Huckabee?

How many consecutive non-Republican-incumbent presidential election cycles has the Republican nominee been the nominee who finished second the time before? (It goes back quite a ways–it’s almost spooky.) Maybe he figures Huckabee’s a historical lock, so why not worry about trying for office in Michigan or Utah sometime soon instead?
(And yes, my tongue was in my cheek, but only partway.)

I thought we were going to get him as governor out here for a bit.

Maybe he figures he did as well this time as he could hope to, and there’s just a limit to how interested the nation is in electing him. It’s not the kind of thought that could enter a politician’s mind, but Romney’s a businessman much more than he is a politician; three campaigns, only four years of his life in office. A problem with ruling out a cabinet position is it makes all the lofty notions of political office as public service look hollow. He will be our President if the country needs him, but not our Commerce Secretary?

Although I wanted Romney to win the presidency his real role has turned out to be a trailblazer for other Mormons who want to be president. As has been mentioned he has been really gracious in defeat and has shown his true colors of a Christian.
