Those Culturally Subversive Mormons Busted Again

First the Osmonds. Then the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Mitt Romney didn’t work out so well but we now have chaste vampires to subvert the world to Mormonism.

The high school teacher at a school where the Twilight movie is being filmed says:

“I and some other FoMo [‘former Mormons’] recognize the Twilight vampires as thinly veiled metaphors for an idealized version of Mormons : They are misunderstood, very loyal, have extremely attractive Aryan features, are very cultured and are not sexually promiscuous.

I was just clued into the Twilight phenomenon in the past month as my wife has just become obsessed with the books.

I can’t tell if the plan is for Twilight readers to be sucked into the dark world of Mormonism or Mormons are supposed to feel liberated as metaphorical Aryan vampires. Either way I fear for that teacher’s students.

My husband: “So, in all that, it’s ‘Aryan’ you take offense at?”

Me: “She may be reducing things ludicrously; she may be comparing apples and kumquats but ‘misunderstood,’ ‘loyal,’ ‘cultured,’ and ‘not promiscuous’ aren’t exactly descriptions I’m going to complain about.”

Maybe your wife is “obsessed” because she is desperately seeking mental stimulation.

Of course, when I said “obsessed” it is in a completely good way.

;-)

And PDE,

I agree that the other features aren’t that bad except for being likened to Aryan bloodsuckers. I’ll have to my research and read the books to get to the bottom of this. Even “Aryan features” may not that bad in and of themselves but the comments is still worth and “headesk.”

What I find funny about the “Aryan features” thing is yeah, my mom’s side is 6 generations of Utah Mormons but me? I’m 5′1″ and brown of hair and eye. Not Aryan by anyone’s definition.

Sorry for the double post.

KJS — no one reads “Twilight” for mental stimulation. Wish fulfillment perhaps, but not mental stimulation. But I can’t stand the books, so maybe I’m just a bit biased. ;)

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Of course, that doesn’t stop the cultural historians i’m in the middle of doing fieldwork with from talking about the “male gaze” all the time, so maybe a cigar isn’t just a cigar for everyone.

Yikes. The evangelical community is going to love this–Mormons as an attractive charismatic people, who don’t seem to have/acknowledge human frailities, who take your soul so it doesn’t get into heaven, and live off the larger community as predators.

Poor evangelicals. As if they didn’t have enough on their hands battling the satanic Harry Potter series.
