The LDS Church responds to Judge Walther’s suggestion that LDS officials supervise FLDS prayer sessions. Besides not understanding what exactly was being proposed or directly asked, it wouldn’t be appropriate.
[Scott Trotter, spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] also acknowledged that such a request would not be fair, either to the polygamous FLDS, which “long ago chose a different path from ours. In fact, many in these isolated communities view us with some hostility as part of the outside world they have rejected.”

I keep wondering how this would be different if we were talking about a group of polygamous muslims. Would the mainstream press be so critical, or would political correctness dictate more respect for the adherents’ firmly held beliefs? I wouldn’t agree with the religious practices any more or any less, nor would the populace as a whole, but I think society would be much more accepting (or perhaps much more hesitant to criticize) if that big white temple was a big white mosque instead.

I’ve seen some other blogs ask this and I have to agree that it would be handled differently.
Although I’ve read of Muslim polygamy in the UK and US, it certainly doesn’t get much attention. Plus, I imagine if it did, there would be a much greater degree of PC deference to culture and making them the freakshow that has become of the Texas FLDS.

Spokes-people are funny little people who seem to have to “front for” those who cannot answer for themselves: or, who “won’t” do so (viz., answer for themselves).
