Religion Clause: “Repeat Defendant Sentenced To Attend Church”

[I]n Davenport, Iowa last Wednesday, Scott County Associate Court Judge Christine Dalton sentenced Pachina Tehran Hill, as part of his probation, to attend the men’s counseling program at Third Missionary Baptist Church in Davenport and to attend church services there for eight consecutive weeks.

    Okay, admittedly the first amendment only forbids *Congress* from establishing a religion (and by later law extending the prohibition to the states)–but doesn’t it seem weird to anybody else that the judiciary appears to be establishing a religion for this individual?

    I would tend to agree at first blush.

    But then you’re inquiring mind made me go back and read the linked to news article (I hate it when that happens).

    It turns out the program was suggested by the defense attorney and approved by the judge. So that makes more sense.

    I’m all for religious programs having equal chance as their secular counterparts in handling society’s problems. But it does require some extra sensitivity.

    Yeah, it makes more sense—but i’m still bothered by it. Deeply bothered, in fact.

    Of course, i’m obviously a heathen, what with liking the “wall of separation” reading of the first amendment and such, so i can probably safely be ignored on this.

    Can you please place a link on your website / or blog; to this Take Back Our Country Song it’s a patriotic song that is very inspiring, and truthful. I wrote this song after being fed up with what I see happening in my neighborhood and to our country daily on the news.

    I am just an ordinary citizen that went away to serve at age 19. And I am sick and tired of the lies and chaos our ELECTED SELLOUT OFFICIALS has put this country into. So I wanted to do my part, as a soldier of the USANG, I wrote this song and put it on this video.

    My state Louisiana was hit hard by hurricane Katrina and hundreds of illegal aliens moved into our community took away jobs that we Americans were ready to do, and now crime has gone thru the roof. I am sick and tired of these people in my neighborhood and hanging out on our street corners. WE MUST DO SOMETHING TO PUT A STOP TO THIS!
