First Presidency urges Utah members to attend caucus meetings

First Presidency urges Utah members to attend caucus meetings tomorrow night, w/ the obligatory disclaimer.

The church statement also reiterated that “principles compatible with the gospel may be found in the platforms of all major political parties. While the church does not endorse political candidates, platforms, or parties, members are urged to be full participants in political, governmental, and community affairs.”

Mostly related: I’m still convinced that the church hierarchy saved the Utah Republican party from itself in the runup to the 2000 caucuses. Arch-conservatives in the party had scheduled the caucuses for a Monday night, and the church sent out a slightly different letter encouraging involvement (going so far as to say to participate despite it being on a Monday night). The result? Really amazingly high caucus turnout, and a rather more moderate Republican slate than anybody had expected.

Interesting. I went to the 2002 caucus and became a delegate.

Unfortunately, the Utah GOP could stand for a little more saving from itself still.
