In a slightly different direction, i’m often struck by the bit in the Book of Mormon where modern Xians are chastised for treating the Jews badly, even thought they’re the ones who gave us most of the Bible (not to mention the X in Xian himself).

I sometimes wonder if some of the slams some Mormons direct at other churches (great and abominable Catho^H^H^H^H^Hchurch, anyone?) are subject to the same condemnation. I mean, the Catholic church worked pretty hard to bring what traditions they could down to us through centuries, the Baptists worked pretty hard at getting to the bottom of what scripture might mean in daily life, even the Calvinists have worked pretty hard at trying to help everyone figure out why there’s a tension between divine mercy and justice. We can even take it farther afield–even if it had nothing else to give (though i believe there’s more there than this), Buddhism could certainly teach us something about what it means for humans to become as God.

Sometimes we get off on this “only true and living church” thing without remembering the “we believe that He will yet reveal many great” things line, and considering that some of these things may be revealed by observing those around us.

Sorry. Got on a bit of a soapbox there. I’ll be quiet now.

    An excellent point.

I came around after really not liking the Catholic church on my mission but I came to see that on many issues, it did a lot of good and has much greater influence than our church does.

No need to apologize. Feel free to use this as your soapbox anytime.

However, as the LDS pioneer on the internet that you are David, I strongly encourage you to start a blog.

I would love to ping your posts with mine own explaining why you’re wrong. ;-)

I keep thinking i might go ahead and do a Mormon-oriented blog, but i’d have to be sure i could be committed to it enough. If i ever do it, though, it’s likely to be more cultural critique than anything else.

That’s true, it is a commitment, but some of the best blogs are ones that aren’t updated that regularly but just have good content.

Don’t get me wrong, I like your comments but I just think you’d be a natural for a blog.
