Humane = let them stay and don't enforce deportation. In other others, forget sustaining the laws of the land as in Article of Faith #12. Mexico is the largest aggregate of converts for the Church so you can see why "compassion" means let them continue doing what they're doing.
The church has take the POSITION of compassion which means legislators will heed their comment.
There is a good article about this on this site: http://www.mormontest.com

Nick,

That sounds fair. There definitely has to be some sort of compromise to accomodate somewhat those who are here and the need for some kind of guest worker program.

Most of the anger that I have seen has been from the conservative base towards the GOP leadership because they have not shown that they care about controlling illegal immigration.

I think Romney has been too busy reassuring the GOP base that he takes the problem seriously. If he gets beyond the primaries, I bet he'll show more nuance.

David, I appreciate your perspective. To me, "calm and humane" in this case includes more than keeping illegal immigrants out. "Calm and humane" includes a fair system of "guest workers" (or similar structure), which treats all with basic human dignity. While it's entirely possible that I've missed something, I haven't heard the latter from Romney.

I don't think it's in conflict at all.

The Church is right in hoping that any immigration legislation be humane and civil. But wanting the borders enforced and employers to hire legally IS humane. Creating a black-market for labor that creates cheap labor market is inhumane.

A lot of attention has been paid to opponents of ILLEGAL immigration that has demonized them as fire-breathing zealots. But they haven't flaunted the law or taken to the streets threatening to shut down businesses.

I think people on BOTH sides need to calm down the rhetoric and work together. And calling just on the other side to "step back" and pretend that they are not humane or calm isn't productive.

Very interesting article! I would note that this seems to conflict with Romney's fire-breathing immigration stance (with exceptions, of course, when it comes to him getting cheap labor on his own landscaping). I wonder if Romney will "take a step back" in this aspect of his campaign?
